A ketogenic diet, or low-carb, high-fat diet, may be one key to chronic pain relief. Celebrity chef Seamus Mullen has rheumatoid arthritis and has suffered from chronic pain for years, which prevented him from exercising and led him to gain over 40 pounds. Deciding he needed to take control of his life, Chef Mullen switched to a ketogenic diet.

Ben Greenfield, who uses ketogenic diets with athletes to improve performance, interviewed Mullen, who talks about how the switch to ketogenic changed his life. He was able to achieve his weight-loss goals, increase his self-confidence, and stop taking the pain medication he had been using for over a decade. Mullen shares his story in his book, Seamus Mullen’s Hero Food: How Cooking with Delicious Things Can Make Us Feel Better.

Chef Mullen isn’t the only one recommending a ketogenic diet for health and weight loss benefits. Dr. Wahls, using a modified Paleo approach and low-carb, high-fat diet, shares her story of being confined to a tilt-recline wheelchair by multiple sclerosis and eventually riding a bike again after changing to a ketogenic diet. Her story as well as the specifics of her diet can be found in her book, The Wahls Protocol: How I Beat Progressive MS Using Paleo Principles and Functional Medicine. In addition, Dr. Sarah Ballantyne, a Paleo expert, states in her book, The Paleo Approach: Reverse Autoimmune Disease and Heal Your Body, that consuming a Paleo diet can help ease chronic pain.

By taking control of the food you put into your body and eating for optimal health, you too can begin easing your chronic pain and begin healing your body.
