This is the first of a two-part interview by Dr. Diane Thompson with Dr. Wahls.

This part discusses how Dr. Wahls’ multiple sclerosis symptoms developed and progressed. She explains the tests she underwent, including a visit to the Cleveland Clinic in hopes of a diagnosis that would explain her symptoms. After discovering that she had MS, Dr. Wahls progressively worsened. She struggled to remember simple things like where her car keys were and began writing everything down. Walking became difficult, until eventually she was confined to a tilt-recline wheelchair.

Dr. Wahls shares how she became determined to take control of her own health and began reading the scientific literature on multiple sclerosis and autoimmune disease, looking for clues as to how she might heal herself. She discovered how food influences health and created her own diet based on Paleo principles. She also found information on neuromuscular stimulation and functional medicine. Dr. Wahls also discusses supplements and the result of these lifestyle and diet changes.

Dr. Thompson has a passion for empowering people to improve their health and live better. She approaches health holistically and believes it includes more than just well-being. Dr. Thompson attended the University of Maryland School of Medicine and is also a speaker, seminar leader, and writer on topics of health and wellness.
