For thousands of years, humans walked and slept directly on the ground. Today, we rarely walk barefoot outside. After reading Earthing: The Most Important Health Discovery Ever? (Paperback) by Clinton Ober, Dr. Steven Sinatra, and Martin Zucker, I believe this disconnect with the earth could be a risk factor for poor health.
Our biological processes generate free radicals. When too many free radicals are present, they damage our mitochondria and cell structures, leading to inflammation and chronic disease. Electrons and antioxidants can help neutralize free radicals and thus prevent cell damage. When we are physically connected to the earth – when we practice this “grounding” so common to our ancestors — electrons from the ground can flow into us and help neutralize excess free radicals. According to Dr. Sinatra, many of us are not receiving enough electrons, and this is may be contributing to poor health. Walking outside in wet sand, mud, or dewy grass is ideal for reconnecting with nature, grounding with the earth, and getting a rich supply of electrons.
