The Role Of Phosphatidylcholine, Minerals and The Optimum pH Balance, And Butyrate:
A turning point in my recovery happened when I dove deep into understanding how my cells run the chemistry of life. It wasn’t until then that I thought deeply about how lifestyle factors (diet, environment, genetics, etc.) were impacting the health of my cells.
While I believe that better health starts with a clean, nutrient-dense diet, many of us with medically complex diseases may have to turn to supplements to make up for the shortcomings of our biochemistry.
BodyBio, a Wahls Protocol®, is a nutritional supplement company that is relentlessly focused on the pursuit of health at the cellular level. BodyBio products stand out from many of the vitamins and supplements on the market because our products were originally created for those with complex disorders over 25 years ago. The founders of BodyBio are leading researchers in the field of complex metabolic disorders, fatty acid analysis, neurodegenerative diseases.
Their products are developed with the utmost concern to be the purest, non-oxidized, high-quality supplements on the market. BodyBio products are founded on “cell membrane medicine” – an investigation into real-world science, not fictional promises. They stand steadfast behind the quality of our products, and believe in the ability of their products to improve lives one cell at a time.
This video will cover:
- The Role of Phosphatidylcholine (PC)

Dr. Terry Wahls:
Hello, Jess. I am so glad to have the opportunity to chat with you today. Let me introduce you to my tribe. This is Jess Berman, who’s with Bodybio. Now, this is a company that I love. They have some really very helpful products for nourishing your cell membranes and your mitochondria. The company is a Wahls partner, and I love doing these interviews with my health and wellness partners to let you know about the products and companies that I trust and love. These interviews are a helpful tool in your journey towards improved wellness. Again, Jess, welcome. I have a couple of questions I’d like to go through with you. First, we touched on this last year, but let’s continue our conversation about phosphatidylcholine and multiple sclerosis. What is it? Can you explain to my audience a little bit more about it? I tell them a little bit that it’s critical to myelin repair. Go on.
Jess Berman:
It is. It is for sure. We’ll call it PC because it’s a lot easier to pronounce. PC is the complex of phospholipids, and phospholipids are what make up your cell membrane, the wall of your cell, wall of your mitochondria. It’s a component of the cell membrane that decreases with age, decreases with toxic insult, decreases through the environmental toxins that are thrown our way. As we age, since it decreases so much, supplementation keeps the integrity and the strength of that cell membrane. It’s a very interesting complex, quite unlike any other, because in the way that we extract it, we get phosphatidylinositol and phosphatidylethanolamine, both of which are really structurally important to neurotransmission.
Dr. Terry Wahls:
Now, to my tribe, many of you have commented I look younger and younger every year, and I would say PC is part of that reason. It’s nourishing my brain, it’s nourishing my skin, and I’m pleased to tell you, I think it is part of why I keep looking younger every year. Now, many of you see that I make this wonderful pudding that I have, and you’ll see me have that nearly every day that includes PC, yes, most central fatty acids, your Bodybio balance oil. Want to talk a little bit about that oil mix and why it can be a helpful part of the PC pudding that I make.
Jess Berman:
Yeah, absolutely. Essential fatty acids are essential to our body. We do not make them in our body, so we need to consume them through our diet. The misconceptions about Omega three Omega six are really rampant. The levels that we need for optimum cellular health are a ratio of four parts Omega six to one part Omega-3. Now, a lot of people just take so much fish oil, its EPA DHA, and the levels are often really thrown out of balance. Something that’s really important for that structural integrity and the fluidity within ourselves is making sure that you get both the alpha linolenic acid, as well as the linoleic acid from Omega six.
I think something that’s so rampantly misunderstood in our world today is that all Omega sixes are equal, and as you know, they are not. There are the store-bought, the restaurant-manufactured, canola vegetable oils that really throw our Omega six levels off balance, but it’s not as simple as just taking Omega threes to rebalance it. You need the good, pure, unoxidized linoleic acid Omega sixes in order to support the balance and have those anti-inflammatory properties in the body.
Dr. Terry Wahls:
Now, people frequently talk about the critical role of minerals, because minerals are a co-factor for many of our enzymes. One of the products that you guys have is a mineral solution, E-lyte. Could you comment what are all the minerals in the E-lyte and how people might use that?
Jess Berman:
It’s basically the … it’s what controls, the minerals of sodium, potassium and magnesium control all of our function, our electrical communications between cells and the functioning of our muscles. We created an electrolyte hydration solution. It’s a concentrate that you add to water that mimics the levels of electrolytes in our body. Most of the electrolyte supplements out there today are very high in sugar, very high in sodium, and they’re really made for professional athletes who may need that replenishment. But from a day to day perspective, we actually need a much different dose in order to keep our bodies in optimum pH balance.
Dr. Terry Wahls:
Yes, minerals are key.
Jess Berman:
Yeah.
Dr. Terry Wahls:
It’s a very important and often underappreciated area. Now, another product that you have that I think is really intriguing is butyrate. Butyrate has a big impact on the gut microbiome. Could you explain that a little bit more for us, Jess?
Jess Berman:
I think, as you know, diet is so important in a clean, really nutrient dense diet is so important to our diets. We typically do not get enough butyrate through foods. Butyrate is a short chain fatty acid that the good bacteria thrive off of in our gut. It actually feeds the colonocytes in the lining of the gut, and so often what’s happening in today’s world because of our food and because of the toxins that are coming our way constantly, the lining of the gut is really in a state of mayhem, and so by supplementing butyrate, you’re going to allow the good bacteria to really thrive in the gut. It’s been shown to also address a lot of really interesting other things in the body, it’s an HDAC inhibitor, promotes healthy DNA. It sequesters ammonia to help with brain fog that happens as we age as well. It’s a really fascinating supplement, it’s being studied all over the world, and it’s one that we’re seeing tremendous growth in just because of the importance of the microbiome now.
Dr. Terry Wahls:
A lot of great things from butyrate for our gut as additional supplement to help calm that leaky gut. Highly recommended.
Jess Berman:
Yeah.
Dr. Terry Wahls:
Now, again, thank you so much, Jess. I’m so thrilled that you and Bodybio are a Wahls partner. I just think, particularly PC and the body balance oil has been a vital part of my daily routine. E-lyte, very helpful because the magnesium, potassium, if they’re often deficient in our diets, very helpful. Nearly everyone with an autoimmune problem has issues with leaky gut and some additional butyrate would probably accelerate that healing and repair. Now, if you want to learn more about Bodybio, their website is bodybio.com. If you want to buy their products, please go to my shop page at terrywahls.com/shop. We have a link to them and they are one of our sponsors. We love their products. I think they’ve been a very helpful partner, and as I mentioned, they’re part of my daily routine.
Terry Wahls:
I hope you’ve enjoyed this interview. What I would love to have you do is down below post the link to what is the one thing that you learned, and is there anything you’re going to add or change in your daily self care routine? By being on the email list, you get personal updates from me. One of the things that I do every week is I read the updates on the latest research. Often that’s about 200 different research papers about autoimmunity, about MS, dietary studies. I’ll select a few papers that I comment on, it’s a tremendous resource. Again, we’d love to hear from you. Please put your comment down below. Stay well, take care of yourself, be Wahls and be healthy.
About Jessica Kane Berman, Chief Marketing Officer, BodyBio
has been a part of my life as far as I can remember. My grandfather, Ed Kane, founded BodyBio when I was a child and his food and lifestyle choices had a huge impact on the entire family. We grew up avoiding sugar, eating organic produce, and avoiding pesticides. When I was 20 years old I suffered from debilitating digestive problems and went under the care of allopathic doctors, trying everything from a restrictive diet to endless testing, nothing helped. I decided to sit down with my grandfather for answers. I started a daily supplementation of vitamins, digestive enzymes, and BodyBio Phosphatidylcholine, and noticed almost immediately healing and resolution. It was this experience that helped me fully understand the potential that vitamins and supplements can have on our health and it changed my life. I’m grateful for the healing I experienced and after a successful career in the art world, decided to leave and begin work at BodyBio with the goal of spreading the word and promoting health.
BodyBio has been trusted by physicians for over 25 years. The company was developed out of targeted blood chemistry analysis and epigenetic testing – investigating some of the most complex disorders in the world. The findings from that research led my Grandfather to create a very specific line of supplements to address cellular health. I have been a part of BodyBio for the last two years and am leading the marketing team in helping my Grandfather bring his research and findings to everyone, not just doctors. In two years, I have spearheaded the rebrand of BodyBio, our new website, and focused our marketing on how we can help educate those seeking better health with our vast knowledge on “cell membrane medicine” – a true understanding of how health at the cellular level is directly correlated to our health.
I am constantly amazed at the lives I’ve seen changed – from micro preemies to seniors — and am committed to the improvement of health at the cellular level for all.
