Research Opportunity for Individuals with Relapsing-Remitting Multiple Sclerosis and Fatigue

Individuals with relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis and fatigue are invited to participate in a research study to determine whether the Wahls Elimination Diet and Swank Diet are effective treatments for multiple sclerosis related fatigue. The Wahls Elimination Diet excludes all grains, dairy, legumes, eggs, and nightshade vegetables. The Swank Diet is a low saturated fat diet that eliminates red meat and high fat foods and includes whole grains and fat free dairy products. Both diets include fruits, vegetables and dietary supplements. Participants will follow their usual diet for 12 weeks and then be randomized to one of the study diets for 24 weeks. Individuals must be willing to follow either diet.

The study consists of 4 visits to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, Iowa. Study activities include blood draws, food records, physical motor tasks, and questionnaires.

Reimbursement will be provided for study-related dietary supplements, parking, and mileage based on current IRS rate up to a maximum of $120 per visit. Individuals traveling more than 140 miles (280 miles round trip) may be reimbursed for one night of lodging up to the maximum federal rate. No other compensation is provided.

Eligible patients are between ages 18 and 70 and have a BMI of at least 19. They must have relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis and multiple sclerosis related fatigue. Patients will continue their current treatments in addition to using the study diet. They cannot be taking insulin or Coumadin. They cannot have kidney stones, heart failure, angina or liver cirrhosis. They must be willing to provide blood samples and fill out detailed food records and questionnaires. Racial and ethnic minorities are encouraged to apply for this study.
