About The Wahls Protocol

The Wahls Protocol: A radical new way to treat all chronic autoimmune conditions using Paleo principles by Terry Wahls, M.D. with Eve Adamson – released in paperback on December 30, 2014

An integrative approach to healing chronic auto-immune conditions by a doctor, researcher, and sufferer of progressive multiple sclerosis whose TEDx talk is already a web sensation.

Like many physicians, Dr. Terry Wahls focused on treating her patients’ ailments with drugs or surgical procedures—until she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2000. Within three years, her back and stomach muscles had weakened to the point where she needed a tilt-recline wheelchair. Conventional medical treatments were failing her, and she feared that she would be bedridden for the rest of her life.

Dr. Wahls began studying the latest research on autoimmune disease and brain biology, and decided to get her vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and essential fatty acids from the food she ate rather than pills and supplements. Dr. Wahls adopted the nutrient-rich paleo diet, gradually refining and integrating it into a regimen of neuromuscular stimulation. First, she walked slowly, then steadily, and then she biked eighteen miles in a single day. In November 2011, Dr. Wahls shared her remarkable recovery in a TEDx talk that immediately went viral. Now, in The Wahls Protocol, she shares the details of the protocol that allowed her to reverse many of her symptoms, get back to her life, and embark on a new mission: to share the Wahls Protocol with others suffering from the ravages of multiple sclerosis and other autoimmune conditions.

    I will read your book.

I had a sudden cardiac arrest in 2009 on the street. I was in a coma for a week. I also am still in recovery, but off most of the medications through a paleo type diet.

    Thanks for writing your book.

I will read it with interest.

My nine yr old son was diagnosed with MS in Aug 2013 he had optic neuritis in 2012 and transvers myelitis a month ago. We are about to choose a treatment for him. What are your thoughts of using diet change for children with MS. So far he had been treated with IVIG, PLEX, and prednisone IV and oral. He has multiple brain and now spinal lesions. Also to make more of a medical mystery he has high levels of mycoplasma antibodies and takes antibiotics for that. Any advice would be great.

  2. Terri Burns, BSN RN says

Excellent book. Easy to read and follow. Pulls together research publications and anecdotal illustrations of the power of nutrition in fighting chronic illness. A must read!

  3. Suzan says

Thank you for your research and sharing your own story. I was diagnosed with ms in 2001 and through diet, exercise and healthy living, I am pharmaceutical free. Looking forward to reading the new book.

    • mayur says

my wife is diagnosed with ms in 2010 now she has got leg nerves pain and becoming more cranky i would like to know tat we are vegi. and dont eat non veg .. will this book still help mi to over come MS in veg diet ?

      • Chloe Rankin says

        Hi Mayur,

The Wahls Protocol is not a vegetarian diet. However, Dr. Wahls does recognize that not everyone chooses to eat meat. In this case, we encourage you to come as you can. See your functional doctor to understand what supplements you may need and at what levels. As a vegetarian, you will at least need to take B12 vitamins. Work with a dietitian to make sure you have adequate meat or protein. Others have found that returning to meat eating was an important part of their recovery.

  4. Susan Reeves says

I live in Canada and was diagnosed with PPMS in 2008. I am not bedridden yet, but if something doesn’t change quickly, I probably will be. I mentioned, just this past week, to my neurologist that I had recently started the Paleo way of eating and was going to follow the Wahls Protocol. She had never heard of it….which was not a big surprise to me! I look forward to walking into her office rather than riding my scooter the next time I see her!

  5. Shannon Pulliam says

‘Just learned about this diet and it makes sense! Diet, not drugs is the answer and I am very optimistic! I, like Susan Reeves am looking forward to walking into my neurologist’s office!

    Too cool!

    • Patricia Rhodes says

I’d love a signed copy! I’m very interested in following her protocol to see if it will help with my autoimmune conditions and I believe my husband possibly has M.S. so I really want to use it on him as well.

Hullo, I am battling with Sjogren’s Syndrome. I have had really severe chronic stress for the last 7 years and then 2 years ago, immediately after a Sinus infection, the Sjogren’s Syndrome started.
Would the Wahls Protocol assist me, and can the Sjogren’s be gotten rid of entirely?
    Thank you, Paula

    • Chloe Rankin says

      Hi Paula,

Thank you for your interest in Dr. Wahls’ work. Dr. Wahls’ is often asked if the Wahls Diet™ plans will cure various diseases. Let me be clear – The Wahls Foundation posts are educational only. The FDA has not evaluated Dr. Wahls’ statements – nor are they intended to diagnose, cure, treat or prevent any disease. Dr. Wahls is however trying to teach people how to eat for their mitochondria and cells – which can allow them to experience greater vitality.
Only your personal physician can treat you. The Wahls Foundation can educate you about the needs of your cells and mitochondria so that they can do the chemistry of life properly. For more information about The Wahls Protocol, I encourage you to purchase the book here.

Please oh please let this book be done in audio also, after many, many years of fighting inflammatory diseases and now half blind with Macular degeneration, (reading is very frustrating) I want to ‘read’ your book by ear and have it by my bedside for the rest of my days….Drs and dietitions have never helped so I began my own search back in the 70’s when my husband was dying of cancer…I have learned some things that have slightly inproved my quality of life.I am making a plea….makit a CD book also…..I am sure that many others would feel the same….Thank you for your giving sense and hope to so many….

  10. says

    Thank You Dr. Wahls
I have MS and I am now getting my life back I started with the Wahls Paleo Plus . I didn’t want to waste time trying to find the one that would work for me. It is really not that hard when you start to realize the results.

  11. Hélène says

I have the book. I have bought 3 more copies and given them away. Probably the most important book I have read in the last 20 yrs. And I have read ALOT of bks!!! I own thousands. This book is better than anything I’ve read about nutrition in 20yrs, period.
    I have a question about:
(jicama, bamboo shoots, water chestnuts–don’t recall seeing these anywhere either)
None are listed anywhere in the book; are they all not worth eating? Celery is green all the way thru but it is a pale green. Eggplant has a brilliant purple skin so I’m wondering about that as well. I know radish with a white flesh, yet red skin, is listed in sulfurous foods. Fennel is supposed to be very cleansing, but what does Dr Wahls think? It is also mostly white with only a bit of green. I would continue eating these veggies as I enjoy them, but wondering about phytonutrient aspect.
Kudos to Terry Wahls for her important contribution to the field of nutritional science!!

    • Yesenia Bujanda says

      Hi Lilian Fricker,

Thank you for your interest in Dr. Wahls’ work. Your functional doctor will be able to discuss your options with adjusting around food allergies and toxic load issues. They should also be able to give more personalized nutritional advice with your results.

I have had MS for 30+ years, I also have hypothyroidism. I have been following the Wahls Protocol for 3 months and have experienced many very positive results!! Thank you Dr Wahls. I just have a question regarding kale and the other cruciferous vegetables – there is info online regarding excess amounts of these vegetables having negative impact on hypothyroidism…..what has your research shown in this regard?? Thank you so much….

    • Jess says

I would also like to find out about how to implement this diet when also trying to treat hypothyroidism. I have read to avoid cruciferous vegetables because they contain high levels of goitrogens (if I have remembered that word correctly) that negatively impact the thyroid gland. Any further info on how to balance these two needs would be much appreciated. Thank you.

  13. Eve says

Its sounds really heavy…but your book is my bible and and I use it as a reminder every day we can change. I stopped with my medicine Betaferon after 7 years for my MS (with dokters approval) and I feel great. You are kind of my “god” and I will follow and cherish the Wahls protocol all my life.

  14. Sherrie says

Would love to follow the exact regimen that the patients in your study follow. How could I get that information? We have both of your books. Thank you for your research.

  15. Wendy Lamm says

Hi. I have a 10 year old DD, son w/ intractable epilepsy. He also has eosinophilic esophagitis, therefore allergic to nearly everything. Very interested in the protocol, but he can’t tolerate fish. Any suggestions?

  16. Maureen says

I would love to be able to go to the upcoming seminar in Iowa, but it’s too far away. I hope some day she can do one in the midwest that would be easier to get to.

  17. Tussock says

I’m already sold on the AIP way of eating. I have Rickettsia & Lyme Disease, CFS, fibromyalgia, RSD, Multiple Chemical Sensitivities and more, but what concerns me regarding the Wahls Protocol is that I also have Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis and have been told to not only avoid nightshade vegetables but also all sulpherous vegetables as they slow down the thyroid. In your experience is this correct or can I follow the Wahls Protocol as is? Many thanks.

My husband has had MS and diabetes since 1996. I purchased The Wahls Protocol Book and we are getting ready to change to the diet. He has been on Tysabri since 2008. We have been taking Juice Plus concentrated whole food capsules since Sept. 2013 and drinking the whole food plant based shakes. They have soy in them but it is water washed and low processed and they do not contain anything artificial including sweeteners. They are also low glycemic. I just need to know if this will be an issue to continue with the Juice Plus Products? He drinks the chocolate and I know it says no chocolate so he will be switching to vanilla. It has made a difference in his health just looking for more improvements. He has recently been told he has an overactive thyroid too.

  19. Magdala says

Hi, I am just reading the book, it sounds very promising. I would like to give it a try. The only concern I have is about the amount of liver and organ foods – I am trying to conceive and I heard that due to amount of vitamin A in these products (which I normally eat) it is not recommended to consume them in large amounts during pregnancy.
What I am asking is not your recommendation or advise (I am aware that this is educational only) but experiences you and people you work with might have when comes to this issue, so that I have enough information to decide. Anybody tried?
I am not living in US, so I cannot consult with any physician or professional you may recommend. Is it possible to contact you by e-mail or here is the only option?
    Thank you

  5. […] Earn your carbohydrates. The carb debate is still a contentious issue and has everyone arguing. How I see it, is that by returning to nutrient dense food, you’ll naturally be going ‘lower carb’ than the typical westerner. However, this does not necessarily mean that you have to go low carb, just me mindful about where you get your sugars. For example, oranges are pretty darn sweet, yet a can of coke has the equivalent sugar content of three oranges without the fibre (that helps to regulate insulin release) or nutrients. So for the sake of argument, yes paleo is low carb – comparative to the absolute excessive amount of carbohydrates consumed in the sedentary western world. This doesn’t mean to say that fruit, tubers or roots are off the menu, rather that my message is essentially this: you need to earn these carbohydrates. Someone sitting in a chair all day, moving minimally and generally expending little energy (i.e. a large proportions of the population) will probably struggle to lose weight if they have a higher carb intake. Whereas an athlete, particularly those doing high intensity training, may benefit from a post-workout sweet potato or some rice. Essentially your carb intake will depend on you – your activity level, weight, lifestyle and so on. I find that if I am not exercising, lowering my carbohydrates and upping my fat intake helps to keep me satiated throughout the day and so I consumer fewer calories and feel great. After a morning HIT session, I NEED to eat some fruit/rice/potato or else I feel shaky and unable to focus. Usually carbohydrates would stimulate my hunger and lead to overeating, yet after exercise carbohydrates actually help to regulate my appetite and prevent cravings later in the day. As a side not, very low-carb ketogenic diets are very interesting and seem to be incredibly beneficial for a range of issues, definitely worth looking into if you suffer from an autoimmune condition.
