Dr. Terry Wahls:

Hello everyone. This is Dr. Terry Wahls with our friend and colleague, Sara Treffert from Biocidin. We’re going to talk a little bit about the Biocidin family and products.

First thing I want to acknowledge, because I’m hearing from so many of you in the autoimmune community and in the public at large, is that we’re aware of the viral infection that is a pandemic now, and so the concern is what can I take, what can I be doing. I see a lot of folks out there promoting immune-boosting supplements, protocols, treatments, prevention strategies.

I want to remind everyone, there is no cure for COVID. What we’ll all talk about in all of my podcasts are the things that we can do to make us as the host, as strong and healthy as possible, and how we can engage in nutrition and self-care so that we’re more likely to achieve better health and better outcomes. Again, if you have specific questions about COVID, go to the CDC website, the WHO website.

My goal is to always talk with you about nutrition, about self-care and how we can achieve better health.

I really, Sarah, I enjoy the Biocidin company because they’ve been a very useful partner in that journey with improving our self-care. So with that preamble, Sarah, welcome, I’m glad to chat with you again. Can you tell us a little bit more about your company and your history?

Sara Treffert:

Right. Thank you for having us, Dr. Wahls, excited to chat with you. I wanted to also say how excited I am to see you in the summer at the conference. It is such an amazing experience, and I highly encourage anyone who is even inkling, thinking about it who hasn’t attended to make the leap and sign up for that.

That is me saying that because I have gone to many conferences, and I walked away from Dr. Wahls’ conference just with a very full heart, very humble and felt very empowered. I know she does a great job at building up the courage in her warrior tribe, and so I just wanted to make sure that we had time that I could express my gratitude and excitement to join the conference again in 2020 this summer.

Dr. Terry Wahls:

Thank you. We loved having you. It is a very special event, so much experience, so much community, so much love and so much hope.

Sara Treffert:

Mm-hmm (affirmative), right. To get to your question and why we are involved in your conference. Bio-Botanical Research is the name of our company, most people know us as Biocidin people, and that is our flagship product. Dr. Rachel Fresco is the owner and formulator of the company. Biocidin has been around for 30 years. It’s a combination of 17 herbs and essential oils, and it has the ability to be kind of an all-in-one, I like to call it my nature’s Swiss army knife because practitioners can use it for various different conditions to help support the body in healing.

Sara Treffert:

Coincidentally, we have had this recording scheduled for quite some time in our calendars, so it just happens to be in a time that people are hyper aware of immune function and making sure that they support their body with healthy choices. It is fitting in the sense that for 30 years people have trusted our products. We’re not making any claims, like you said, we don’t have any treatment protocols or anything like that either. It’s just that we know that practitioners have used our product line to help support health over the past 30 years and address dysbiosis, which is an imbalance of the bugs in the body.

Dr. Terry Wahls:

Correct. I know the Biocidin has a variety of products. The toothpaste, which is not really a toothpaste, more of a tooth gel that is just so incredibly good. Oh there it is. Can you talk about that? The dental health and dental plaques have a huge impact on our risk of worsening autoimmunity, worsening heart disease, worsening cognitive decline. Can you talk a little bit about what you guys have observed in terms of the oral health?

Sara Treffert:

Absolutely. To back up just one second to show people who aren’t familiar with it. This is the original formula of Biocidin, it is in a tincture form. It’s wonderful for pediatrics all the way… So infant to elderly, and also can be used head to toe in internal, external.

Practitioners really love this product because it, yes, it is very potent. I want to make sure that people are aware that a little goes a long way. Just because it’s a natural supplement it does not mean that it’s not potent. Sometimes slow and steady often wins the race. The reason why I’m showing you this, so this is the original formula, and then in the toothpaste, it’s 20% biocide in there. That is why it’s considered a therapeutic grade toothpaste. We’ve had wonderful results with that.

Over the 30 years of seeing the results with taking the Biocidin internally, and then we started working with a dentist looking at how the Biocidin could be rubbed into the guns, swished, all those types of things they were seeing, things like periodontal issues could be decreased or even reduced which is apparently had not been believed previously. That’s where it’s coming from having an imbalance in the bugs in your oral cavity.

When you’re able to address that, that’s something very low hanging fruit that all of us are brushing your teeth all the time, every single day, hopefully mostly twice or three times a day, and so by cleaning up the oral health is really, really important for overall health.

Especially in your community, because you have so many people that are at a little bit more of a, not disadvantaged but their immune system might be more compromised, and so they really need to make sure that they’re keeping their first line of defense, which is your mouth, healthy. Not by bombing it with mouthwash and things like that that are just typical mouthwashes that are going to kill everything.

The Biocidin itself with the toothpaste and then the oral care solution, this is a concentrate so it’s a really small [inaudible 00:07:26]… which is going to be really wonderful for everyday use, then the Dentalcidin LS is great for that extra workhorse. [inaudible 00:07:40] we’ve seen things improve tissue actually growing and the pockets decreasing, and also seen dramatic changes just in the slides with the bugs.

A dentist is taking scrapings out of the pockets, putting that on a slide and then putting that under a microscope, and then treating that with the Biocidin or putting that Biocidin, the liquid on there, the oral solution on there and then looking at under the scope and seeing a dramatic change in the bugs that are on there and actually seeing a drastic improvement. Really neat to see that biome adjusting but not killing off the good bugs.

Dr. Terry Wahls:

Very important. We know health is deeply linked to the microbes that live in our mouth, in our gut, on our skin.

Sara Treffert:

Can I interject with-

Dr. Terry Wahls:

Go ahead.

Sara Treffert:

I think this is a really important piece for all of your community. I live a very healthy lifestyle, very organic, I exercise, I take very good care of myself, and I have great oral health. Last spring the dentist came to, or instead just a raving review. “Perfect. I don’t have a lot to scrape off, great oral health. Everything looks perfect.” Fast-forward six months, I ended up not knowing I got a parasite.

The reason why I’m telling you that is because when we are compromised and we are in… we’re vulnerable to catching something, it all of a sudden was showing up in my oral health, my gums started to bleed and all these other things. I want people to think about that from a systemic component of here is having perfect oral health, and then all of a sudden, six months later… I wasn’t changing anything, but I happen to get a parasite.

My oral health was the first sign of defense and my body is saying something’s not right. Always a great time to stop, look at your oral health and see where you can make adjustments because it can really, really help your overall health.

Dr. Terry Wahls:

Yeah, really it’s a window into the inflammation levels across your body. Your skin is a window, your mouth is a window, your eyes can be a window. That’s part of what I teach, and we’ll cover again at the seminars how we can pay more attention to these clues that we’re receiving from our body if we just know to stop and look and pay attention.

Sara Treffert:

Exactly.

Dr. Terry Wahls:

That is so, so important. Now, we talked a little bit about biofilms. Can you explain what the biofilm is? because I don’t know that people understand the biofilms that we have in our mouth.

Sara Treffert:

Sure. Just think of biofilms as plaque on your teeth, that is one form of a biofilm and that’s very common. Also the slime in maybe a dog bowl that you haven’t cleaned out in a while, that when if you just rinse it under there, there’s that slime coating.

To back up what is a biofilm is now that you have an idea of where it’s present in your daily life is, biofilms are really in a way for bugs, whether that’s an organisms to live together and be protected against things like our immune system, for example. What’s happening in multiple bugs, it can be viruses, yeast, fungus, bacteria of course, everybody thinks of biofilms and bacteria or [inaudible 00:11:26], excuse me, but it really can be various different bugs living together harmoniously in these communities, if you will.

These bugs get together and they create this substance, it’s called extra polymeric, and it’s a sticky substance that basically is like a shield. They secrete that and they live inside of that. When they live inside of that, they have kind of their own little ecosystem. It’s a smart mechanism. There’s good biofilms and there’s bad biofilms, we all focus on the bad ones right now.

You wonder like, “Okay if you’re getting rid of the bad biofilms, are you affecting the good biofilms?”, and that’s a whole another topic. You wonder if they have all these bad biofilms, they probably don’t have a lot of good biofilms, that’s part of the reason right there.

You have these communities throughout the body. They can also be common in ear infections. Any chronic infection, think of bugs. That’s always an underlying cause. I’m not saying that it’s the only issue, but it’s oftentimes a huge underlying piece in any chronic condition, is looking at a bug in dysbiosis. Some of them can be beneficial bugs that have turned pathogenic because of the load and because of what’s going on in the system.

These bugs live together in these communities that go basically undetected by the immune system. These shields that they produce make it so the immune system is almost unaware of it. But the problem is it starts at screening their garbage essentially, you know they have bug poop. I know that Dr. Wahls loves talking about poo.

Dr. Terry Wahls:

Yeah.

Sara Treffert:

It’s really the bug poop that’s being excreted and then it gets sent throughout the body, and that’s what’s causing this chronic inflammation that’s going on. Something called LPs is one of the things, it’s lipopolysaccharide which is something that some of these gram negative type bacteria like E. coli which is very common, is excreting and getting sent throughout the body. So you have this inflammatory properties that are coming because of the biofilms that might be in your system.

That’s why the Biocidin, that was our first main research study that we did, was looking at the biofilms and looking at how the Biocidin is effective against them, and it stops it in five different ways. It’s really multifactorial which makes it a very unique product in that sense.

Dr. Terry Wahls:

Okay, excellent. Product quality is really important if we’re taking any kind of supplements or food. Can you tell us a little bit more about how Biocidin manages their quality?

Sara Treffert:

Yeah. That’s a great question and I think it’s really important, especially for your community because we want to make sure that you’re using the highest quality supplements available. Dr. Rachel Fresco who’s the owner and founder, she is also very cognizant and aware, she’s a very sensitive being and she wants to make sure that there’s the highest quality on the market.

Not only are they professional strength products, but they also are being tested to make sure that we don’t have any microbes or any heavy metals in there as well. We use third-party manufacturing, they’re all vetted, they’re all monitored by the FDA to make sure that they are using good manufacturing practices.

Dr. Terry Wahls:

I want to remind everyone that this is a very important issue. Many of the supplements come from China or India where there’s less rigorous quality control. There’s certainly been reports of lead, mercury, arsenic in some of the supplements, the Chinese medicine supplements, traditional Chinese medicine.

My advice is always look for a company with good manufacturing practices. Ideally, a company here in the US that we can have confidence in that your supplement, though that herbs may be a very powerful, helpful herbs, if it was grown in conditions that are contaminated with arsenic, lead, mercury, cadmium, then the beneficial qualities of that herb are lost because of the toxic heavy metals.

Sara Treffert:

Right.

Dr. Terry Wahls:

The quality control in India, in China, it’s not so clear. I feel much better about having products that are manufactured here in the US. I have a great deal of confidence in the Biocidin family. I use them, I particularly personally love the toothpaste.

My family and I have been talking about how great our mouths feel. My dentist also has said like, “Wow, your mouth just keeps getting better and better.” In addition, I also drink apple cider vinegar and I’m monitoring my a salivary pH as part of a way to keep myself in optimal health. Again, using things like Biocidin for my tooth gel to keep my mouth as optimally tuned as I can. My dental hygienists keep giving me better and better mark saying like my dental health just keeps improving, which is of course lovely to see.

Sara Treffert:

Right.

Dr. Terry Wahls:

Again, I want to remind everyone that we’re not making claims of treatment cure or prevention, we’re trying to talk with you about the importance of self-care in doing all that we can to keep our mouth as healthy as possible. Then work with your personal physician, medical team to take these concepts that you learn about today, and the concepts you’ll learn in the seminar about the many, many things that are under our control that will have a big impact on our overall health.

If you look down at the who’s at risk for having a serious COVID-19 reaction requiring hospitalization, requiring admission, requiring intensive care, what puts you at risk is being over the age of 60, having a serious condition requiring immune suppressing medication, having lung disease, tobacco use, obesity, heart disease, severe obesity.

One of the most important observations I have for all of you is that study after study has shown that it’s our diet and lifestyle choices that either accelerate aging and make us age more rapidly than our chronologic age, or help us age more slowly and make us younger than our chronologic age. When I had my test, my telomeres checked which are a measure of your biologic age, we’re able to show that my biologic age is 12 years younger than my chronologic age.

That is what we all want to do to try and move ourselves out of the highest risk categories to lower risk categories, because there’s no cure. All we’ve got are the things that we do with our diet and lifestyle care. That’s what I tell my tribe, that kind of diet and self-care is what we’ll talk about at the seminar. This becomes just more, and more, and more important as we see everything else that’s happening in the world.

Sara Treffert:

Yeah. To reiterate the anti-aging component and the importance of overall oral health, is the bugs tend to, they really like to feed on the collagen in your… and that’s what holds your teeth in place. Collagen is a huge hot topic right now, everybody’s talking about collagen and making sure that you’re eating enough and getting it in your diet, whether that’s bone broth or through other foods.

The thing is at the end of the day, you have to clean it. If you want to look younger especially on the face, make sure you’re cleaning up your oral health. By making sure that those bugs aren’t having breakfast, lunch, and dinner because you’ve left remnants and things that they can feed on those high carbohydrates that they are just having a feast on. That’s one way to protect your collagen is making sure that you address your oral health.

Dr. Terry Wahls:

Marvelous. Well, Sara, it is just wonderful chatting with you again and I look forward having you at the seminar and being part of the seminar family.

Sara Treffert:

Thank you so much. I appreciate it.
